When acclaimed education writer Loren Pope first set out to share with students, families, and counselors his thoughts about colleges, his goal was to provide insights that would allow people to make more informed choices. He felt strongly that uninformed choices could account for heavy dropout, transfer, and failure rates. Too often college choices are made based on false perceptions, misinformation, or a lack of information. Those insights led to the publication of Colleges That Change Lives and the recognition of 40 very special colleges and universities—one public and 39 private from 24 states and with enrollments ranging from 300 to 3,000.

National Foreign Language Week was inaugurated in the Spring of 1957 by Alpha Mu Gamma. Sister Eloise Therese, the National President of Alpha Mu Gamma from 1956 to 1960, discovered that such a week had never been officially celebrated in the United States as a whole, although foreign language had receive recognition by different educational institutions at various periods of the academic year. Inspired by her the National Council of Alpha Mu Gamma began to formulate plans to make the United States aware of the need for and importance of foreign language study through the celebration of NFLW. The first celebration was set for the week of February 17 to 23, 1957. Each year since then the National Executive Council of AMG has set a week for this event. In recent years it has become the practice to have NFLW during the first full week of March.

UW Summer Institute for Mathematics
University of Washington Within the typical high school curriculum, a student has limited opportunities to acquire a full appreciation of the nature of mathematics: its wide-ranging content, the intrinsic beauty of its ideas, the nature of mathematical argument and proof, the surprising power of mathematics within the sciences and beyond. Getting a glimpse of the depth and beauty of mathematics can be a transforming experience for a student, whatever interests the student may intend to pursue in the future. The Summer Institute for Mathematics at the University of Washington is intended to provide talented, enthusiastic students with just such a glimpse. The mathematical topics studied are accessible, yet of sufficient sophistication to be challenging, allowing students to participate in the experience of mathematical inquiry and be immersed in the world of mathematics.
