Students who do college-level work in high school can receive appropriate credit or placement or both on the basis of performance in the Advanced Placement Program (A.P.) of the College Board. University of Washington
The UW encourages and applauds students who have chosen Advanced Placement (AP) Courses and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses as part of their high school curriculum. These courses, as well as honors courses, are challenging and demanding, and we believe they provide excellent preparation for University study.
The University Honors Program offers freshman students of outstanding promise and achievement a special opportunity: to participate in a rigorous, intensive course of study providing intellectual challenge in a small-group learning atmosphere. The 150 students admitted each year to the Honors Program do not just study harder or learn more information; they also develop a more questioning approach to what they learn and take an active role in the learning process.
Who is Competitive for Honors
Competition is quite intense for the limited number of places available in the entering Honors class each year. Applicants to the Honors Program are selected on the basis of several factors, including grades, curriculum, test scores, honors essay, school and community service, and school evaluation. Successful candidates are likely to have: exceptional academic records, marked, for example, by the presence of AP, Honors, or IB classes, clear evidence of advanced writing skills, and a record of commitment to school and larger community. The average of grades and SAT scores for the Honors class of 2001 was 3.90 and 1380. Adjustments are made for schools whose grading practices more closely approximate those of the UW.
