Hello AP/IB Boosters!

Report Urges Students to Take Advanced Placement Exams After Honors Programs

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21049-2004Dec22.html

"College-level courses offered in high school, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB), do not appear to improve academic performance in college, [UNLESS] students take the tests at the end of each course, according to a major study by researchers at the University of California at Berkeley."
We (AP/IB Boosters) have been adamant about the need for every AP course to culminate with the associated national AP exam. Students should only receive the coveted AP designation on their transcripts if they take the final (the national AP exam). This is issue number 5 on our recommended 12-step improvement program.

"Contrary to the conventional wisdom, research has shown that tests that measure students’ mastery of specific, college-preparatory subjects, such as the SAT II, are consistently better predictors of college performance than tests that are designed to assess students’ general reasoning capacity or aptitude for learning, such as the SAT I. The subject-specific, curriculum-intensive AP exams are the epitome of "achievement tests," in this sense, and their validity in predicting college performance should not be surprising from that standpoint."
"[W]e believe that sitting for the examinations should become an integral part of AP courses. Otherwise, students will miss an important opportunity to validate their performance, colleges and universities will lack information that can be highly useful in deciding upon appropriate placements, and AP will be less credible as a rigorous program for high school students. (National Research Council, 2002a:170)"

High School to UW GPA Transition Report 1999 - 2003

The University of Washington maintains statistics on how well students from Washington high schools perform at the University. A well-known problem is grade inflation in high schools. The UW scores each Washington high school. This school score is used as part of the admissions criteria for students applying to the UW. Students from high schools with a history of grade inflation are expected to have a higher GPA than students from high schools with more rigorous grading policies.

Listed below are the rankings for every WA State high school in the study. The percentiles shown indicate each school’s ranking in the state. (A school with a 90%-tile rating means it performs better than 90 % of WA high schools. An "A" in other words.). The higher the percentile, the lower the GPA drop for the cohort students’ high school GPA to their first year UW GPA. A higher percentile is good (not much grade inflation compared to other WA high schools). Similarly, a lower percentile is bad (inflated high school grades).

Each year, UW sends the full detailed report (or a web link to it) to every Washington high school principal.
Many high school teachers have told us how they are under tremendous pressure (from students and parents) to give higher and higher grades. This is unfair and it damages the reputation of schools and makes it more difficult for future students to gain acceptance to competitive colleges. This is another reason why we (AP/IB Boosters) advocate AP exams as part of every AP course grade. The national AP exams are graded by an independent group of teachers and professors. Whining will not improve scores.

Free Memberships, for Interested K-12 Teachers, in New Computer Science Group
The College Board recently had an article on a new Computer Science Group.
"In January, both individuals and institutions will be able to join via the organization's Web site www.csta.acm.org. Members will have access to research and publications related to computer science education and access to Web-based training courses."
http://apcentral.collegeboard.com

http://www.csta.acm.org/

"The Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) is a membership organization that supports and promotes the teaching of computer science and other computing disciplines by providing opportunities for K-12 teachers and students to better understand the computing disciplines and to more successfully prepare themselves to teach and to learn.

UW Mini Medical School: A 6 part series open to the public (Recommended for high school students who are considering a medical career)
Item #11 on our recommended 12-step program is promoting academic events.
http://www.apibboosters.org/GoalsAndObjectives.html

This event is definitely one of the gems. The University of Washington Medical School is one of the best in the nation. Its nursing school is often rated the best. We are so fortunate to have such a national university so close. Every year, the UW Medical School holds a special series of lectures and demonstrations open to the public. Donations are encouraged, but otherwise this program is free. It is a great opportunity for high schools students to learn if a medical career might be in their future. Students should be at least 15 years old because of the nature of the subject matter.
http://courses.washington.edu/minimed/

Only serious students should register. This series will fill up quickly. Please plan to attend each lecture if you do register.
"Among the many exciting programs this year, you will hear about life-altering innovations and techniques of reconstructive plastic surgery; learn about the effectiveness of pre-amputation medications and how the human mind controls pain; and hear about the ability to create individualized therapies from disease predictions and molecular diagnosis."
The first session is February 8, 2005
Title:
"The Faces of Medical School"
Synopsis:
Welcome to UW Mini-Medical School. What does it take to get into medical school? What is the dreaded "interview" like? What's involved in training physicians, and what are some necessary "survival skills" needed to become a doctor? Focus on the teaching and learning of clinical skills, including patient communication, at the bedside.
Presenter(s):
Terry Mengert, M.D.
Professor, UW School of Medicine, UW Medical Center Emergency Department
Alan Kent, Ph.D.
Director of Counseling, UW School of Medicine
Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
