Study Skills Workshop (High School, Pre-College) – October 20, 2004.

Wednesday, October 20, 2004, 7 PM – 8:30 PM, Jackson HS Commons.

http://www.apibboosters.org/events/StudySkillsWorkshop_HighSchool.html

The AP/IB Boosters are proudly cosponsoring this event with the Henry M. Jackson HS PTSA.

Presented by: Aileen Kane, Coordinator of Learning Support Services, Center for Writing and Learning, University of Puget Sound.

This workshop will help you learn methods to boost your learning/studying efficiency. Parents can learn ways to help their sons and daughters. The techniques and tips presented at this workshop can be used in high school as well as college. Learn about the significant studying/homework demands of college. On average, college students need to study 2-3 hours for each 1 hour of in-class time. For a 15 unit full course load in college, that is usually 5 courses per semester, 15 hours of in-class time per week, and 30 to 45 hours of out-of-class study time per week. And that assumes highly productive study hours. This workshop is open to all Jackson HS students and their parents, teachers, administrators and invited guests.

2004/2005 AP Courses at Jackson HS

Jackson High School is offering #11 (#14 sections) Advanced Placement (AP) classes for 2004/2005. Last year some of the AP classes were differentiated, which means they were combined with other similar classes, such as AP English and AP Government. This year, all of the AP classes are independent and not combined with other curriculums. This change will greatly benefit all AP students. We should see an increase in the average AP test scores in May 2005 vs May 2004.

Note: AP Chemistry with Mr. Fortmann was offered during 2004/2005, but it was canceled due to a small class size. We sincerely hope JHS will offer AP Chemistry again in 2005/2006, it's a great class!

The following AP level courses being taught to JHS students during 2004/2005:

AP Calculus AB: 2nd period: Mr. Hinckley

AP Computer Science A: 4th period: Mr. Thorleifson

AP English Language & Composition: 3rd period: Ms. Baker

AP English Literature & Composition: 4th and 6th period: Mr. Nicoletta

AP Physics B: 3rd period: Mr. Sidenquist

AP Psychology: online through the Everett School District with an Everett School District teacher

AP Statistics: 5th period: Mr. Christianson

AP Studio Art, Drawing, 2D, 3D: 6th period: Ms. Barer

AP Government & Politics, United States: 1st period: Ms. Seltzer

AP US History: 3rd period: Mr. Mellana

AP World History: 1st, 2nd period and 6th periods: Mr. Anderson

Our thanks to the JHS staff for offering and teaching these tough courses.

2004 National Blue Ribbon Schools

http://www.ed.gov/programs/nclbbrs/2004/index.html

Blue Ribbon Schools are nationally recognized schools.

"The program requires schools to meet either of two assessment criteria. It recognizes schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems; and it rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments.

Of the schools submitted by each state, at least one-third must meet the first criterion of having 40 percent of the students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program allows both elementary and secondary schools to be recognized in the same year."

Seattle Times College Guide Published October 17, 2004

Last Sunday, the Seattle Times published a College Guide. Here is the link for the online version.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/news/education/collegeguide/

One of the quotes in the guide:

"I wish I'd practiced better study skills. College isn't like high school; you can't ignore the reading, because the tests in college cover a lot more than the stuff you talk about in class. — Jill Eagle, Junior in math at UW"

Hope to see you all at the Study Skills Workshop on Wednesday, October 20th.

Thank you.
