AP/IB Boosters 2004/2005 Specific Objectives

We have tabulated the top 12 issues that we believe are the most important to improve the academics at the Everett School District. Great strides are occurring but there is room for improvement. Please let us know if you think we have the order wrong or if there should be other issues on the list.

Again this year, we hope to do more than just state improvements needed. We intend to expend our own time, effort, and resources to help bring them to fruition. We welcome your participation.

The College Track, 3-Part PBS Mini Series, Sunday, October 3, 2004

KCTS will air the documentary "The College Track" on Sunday, October 3, 2004 from 10 AM to 1 PM.

"The three-part series examines how low expectations and lack of rigorous preparation limit students' choices and hamper their chances for success. The series illustrates how innovative programs designed to bridge gaps can make all the difference."

The following Web site will help parents, students and concerned members of the community to find answers to questions raised by the program.

Study Skills Workshop at Heatherwood Middle School

The AP/IB Boosters are working with the Heatherwood PTA to present an evening Study Skills Workshop primarily to help parents help their kids with providing a conducive learning/studying environment at home, learn time management, study for tests, and help their kids with mathematics homework among other topics. This workshop is tentatively planned for Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at 7 PM.

In our opinion, this is a great issue for the PTA to address. Our thanks to the Heatherwood PTA. We encourage all middle school families to join and participate in their school’s PTA.

Study Skills Workshop at Henry M. Jackson High School

The AP/IB Boosters are cosponsoring (with the JHS PTSA) a high school / pre-college Study Skills Workshop at Jackson HS on October 20th, at 7 PM.  Aileen Kane (Coordinator of Learning Support Services, The Center for Writing and Learning, University of Puget Sound) has graciously accepted our request to lead the workshop presentation.

Promoting and teaching good study skills is an excellent PTSA issue. We are grateful for the PTSA’s participation. And we encourage all high school families to join their local PTSA and help support causes such as this one.

Robotics Contest for Middle School Students

“The FIRST LEGO League (FLL), considered the "little league" of the FIRST Robotics Competition, is the result of a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Company. FLL extends the FIRST concept of inspiring and celebrating science and technology to children aged 9 through 14, using real-world context and hands-on experimentation.

With the help of LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ Robotics Invention System™ technology, young participants can build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style robotics event specially designed for their age group. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions.”
