OLYMPIA – March 18, 2004 – Gov. Gary Locke and Terry Bergeson, state superintendent of public instruction, today presented Madison Elementary School in Everett with the "Reading School of the Month" award for March 2004.

"Reading is the foundation of all academic success," Locke told students. "No matter what you want to be when you grow up, you have to start by being a good reader. I am so proud of all the progress the students at Madison have made in reading. It’s a credit to your hard work, and to the hard work of your teachers, administrators and parents."

Madison Elementary is above the state average percentages in all areas of the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). The school has made significant gains during the past three years. Forty seven percent of Madison students participate in the state’s free or reduced price lunch program.

"Schools selected for this award have done more than just raise the scores of their students," Bergeson told students and teachers. "They’ve struck the right balance of a focus on instruction and providing an environment where the students and teachers feel supported and valued. Madison Elementary has an energy and excitement that’s all about helping students achieve their goals."

Locke and Bergeson also read "I Knew You Could!" by Craig Dorfman to an all-school assembly and presented an autographed copy of the book to the school librarian.

The governor and the superintendent started the "Reading School of the Month" program in January 2002 to raise awareness about the importance of reading and learn how struggling schools made drastic changes to become exemplary reading schools.

UW Math Day Recap

14 Jackson High School students were part of the sold out (1200 students) 14th annual UW Math Day for High School Students event this year. Our thanks to Jackson HS math teacher Mr. Christianson for accompanying these students to this event that allowed students to sample higher level mathematics applications at the University of Washington. We also want to thank the school district again for providing transportation and a substitute teacher for this field trip.

Details on this event can be found at:

http://www.outreach.washington.edu/k12/mathday.asp

Look for it again next year.

Spring College Fair Recap

Once again Seattle University hosted the Seattle Area Spring College Fair. Over 100 colleges from around the country were represented at the March 20th event including Caltech, Northwestern, Gonzaga, Whitman, and the University of Michigan. These fairs are excellent opportunities for students (and their parents) to obtain the real scoop on which high school courses best prepare students for the rigors of college.

4 Free Important UW Academic/Career Exploration Events in April

The AP/IB Boosters have assembled information packets on the 4 University of Washington Open Houses described below. These packets will be distributed to each of the Everett School District's 5 middle schools and each of the district's 4 high schools. Our hope is that the colorful fliers contained in each packet will be posted for students, parents, and teachers to learn about these events. These events allow students to explore future academic and career choices.

The University of Washington Health Sciences Open House

"The University of Washington¹s Health Sciences Center would like to invite you and your students to join us for our Open House 2004. This year¹s open house is "Mapping a Healthy Future" and will be held on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Warren G. Magnuson Health Sciences Center.

This informative and entertaining event will feature dozens of exhibits on educational, clinical and research programs sponsored by the Health Sciences Center, UW Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center. Information will also be provided on careers in the health sciences, a dynamic and increasingly sophisticated area of employment that is expected to experience prolonged growth in the decades ahead.

Students in Grades 9-12 are invited to attend the Open House with a teacher or chaperone on Friday, April 23, 2004 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Special arrangements will be made to accommodate the thousands of students expected on that day, including the creation of designated parking areas for the school buses. While Friday has traditionally been the day most schools send their students, you are also welcome to attend on Saturday, if necessary.

To register your high school group, please complete the registration process online at www.washington.edu/hsoh/. The school group registration deadline has been extended to March 12 to encourage more student groups to take advantage of this wonderful learning opportunity!

If you plan to bring a group of high school students to the UW Health Sciences Open House 2004, please remember the following guidelines and suggestions:
1) One teacher or chaperone is required to accompany each group of 15 students throughout the entire tour.
2) We strongly urge schools to transport their students to the open house as a group on school buses or using public transportation if possible, as parking space is very limited on campus.
3) While we encourage your school to attend whenever you can, please note that the open house is expected to be least crowded during the afternoon hours on Friday, April 23rd.

Students in Grades K-8 are invited to attend with their families on Saturday, April 24, 2004 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. We would appreciate it if you would share information on the 2004 Open House with your parents in upcoming publications such as school newsletters or newspapers. This event is free and open to the public and is considered a great family outing.

If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Michelle Cody Ritter, Health Sciences Open House Coordinator at ritterm@u.washington.edu or 206.543.1734. We hope you and your students will be able to join us for this unique event."
