AP Calculus Question of the Month of July from the College Board

The College Board’s AP Central has started publishing sample monthly AP Calculus Questions. While these questions are not straight from the AP Exam they do give a flavor of the depth of subject matter understanding AP courses provide. The following question is for the month of July.

Calculus with Compass and Straight Edge?
Let's go back to the "old days" for this month's problem. Given the graph of a parabola (of the form f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, where a, b, and c are unknown) on a scaled grid:

(A) Construct a,b,c, and f’(0) with compass and straight edge.
(B) Let T(p,f(P)) be any point on the parabola. Use this point to construct a and f’(p) with compass and straight edge.

Hint: Think symmetric difference quotient with h = 1.

You can find this and other archived questions at the College Board’s web site.

Edmonds Community College

In our last newsletter we focused on another National university, Northwestern. Northwestern, like practically every 4 year college, strongly encourages and rewards students who have challenged themselves in high school. Our local community college also does the same.

The following table shows how Edmonds Community College awards AP credit.
