Expanded
Proposed Required and Recommended Summer Reading
We have
expanded our proposed recommended/required summer reading from 6-12 to K-12. As
a base for the K-5, we used the "Books to Build On," by E. D. Hirsch,
Jr. Dr. Hirsch is professor emeritus at the University of Virginia
and author of many acclaimed books including Cultural Literacy: What Every
American Needs to Know and The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them. He
also founded the Core Knowledge Foundation. For 6-12, we used the Bellevue
School District's Required 2003 Summer Reading program as a guide along with
other schools including Lakewood High School in Lakewood, Ohio and Gar-Field
Senior High School in Woodbridge, Virginia. For AP Courses, we used AP
teacher recommendations from the College Board’s Electronic Discussion Groups.
Many EPS teachers already have a
summer reading assignment. To assist students, parents, and teachers, we have
started to compile a list of these assignments.
We started working with
teachers during the last week. Heatherwood 7th Grade Challenge Block,
Shirley Kinsey, has her summer reading listed. Students in Ms. Kinsey's class
will be able to earn 40 extra credit points by completing the assignment(s)
listed on our web page.
We are asking all Everett School District
principals (especially Gateway MS, Heatherwood MS and Jackson HS) to assist us
with this effort.

Math Guide Updated
We have
updated our on-line math guide with information provided by the school
district.
http://www.apibboosters.org/GuideMath.html
Many parents in the
last year have inquired about the issues addressed in the "Math Guide."
The "Math Guide," like all of the information contained on the AP/IB Booster web
pages, are always works in progress. We update the pages as soon as we
receive updated or new information.
Please inform your friends in the
community, that many of their "Math questions" can be answered by the Math
Guide. Please let me know other questions and concerns we can answer on
the Math Guide web pages.
Guest Authors
Many of you have asked
(including EPS Administrators) if we would include "guest articles" in the AP/IB
Booster Newsletter . . .The answer is . . YES! We do reserve the
right to edit. This Forum will not be used to attack individuals. Please
e-mail articles to my attention.
