PROPOSED Required and Recommended Summer Reading for All 6th-12 Graders: Authored by the AP/IB Boosters

Henry M. Jackson High School, based on the last WASL reading assessment, is not far above the minimum reading level that will start to trigger remedial action, as stipulated by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), if they do not improve.

But even without this wakeup call for reading improvement, we support summer reading for the same reasons as stated by Gar-Field Senior High School staff in Woodbridge, Virginia:

  • To emphasize the importance of continual independent reading
  • To provide an opportunity to develop reading proficiency
  • To promote high expectations of all students
  • To provide enrichment and supplemental readings in specialized courses.

The following link is a draft of a PROPOSED required and recommended summer reading assignment for Jackson HS, Heatherwood Middle School, and Gateway Middle School.

We are also proposing that the Everett School District consider this program for the entire district similar to the Bellevue School District's required summer reading program for all 6th-12th graders.

The proposal is just that . . a proposal . . in its current form it is a working document . . .A document to start a conversation on the issue of summer reading.  We value and NEED your input to construct a final draft, that we can submit to the Everett Public School District for their consideration.

The final draft may take a form that is different from the "working document."  We have offered to post on the AP/IB Booster website, any suggested and required reading for students at all Everett Public School District Schools. To Teachers and EPS Administrators: Please send any book titles that you would like to have posted to: info@apibboosters.org
. Please state the grade and or class of any required books, as well as any assignments.
