Summary of Events this Week
National AP Exams May 5 – May 16
Over the
next 2 weeks, thousands of students across the nation will be taking the AP
exams. About 30 students from Everett HS, 40 from Jackson HS, and 100 from
Cascade HS have elected to participate. We wish them all
success.
The International
Baccalaureate Programme May 2003 Exams
The IB Program also has
comprehensive exams. They are administered in May and November. For details see
the following.
High schools in the
area that offer the IB program include: Edmonds-Woodway, Inglemoor, and
Interlake. For families considering an IB education for their children, we
recommend Inglemoor High School in the Northshore School
District.
No Child Left Behind
Principal Fred
Dahlem (JHS) gave a presentation on the Elementary and Secondary Education Act
(ESEA) in Washington at the last JLC (Jackson Leadership Council) meeting and
the last PTSA meeting. The area of concern is reading. JHS students, based on
the WASL reading assessment, are not far above the minimum level that will start
to trigger Federal action if they do not improve. For the latest WASL statistics
and more information on the ESEA, see the following:
A new emphasis is
being put on reading. JHS will soon have a recommended/required summer reading
program. As soon as this program is developed, we will assist in publicizing
it.
Required Summer Reading of all 6th-12th graders at the
Bellevue School District
This summer, all Bellevue students
entering the 6th - 12th grade will have required summer reading - with homework.
This includes Special Education students and ESL (English as a Second Language)
students. They will also write a paper on their summer reading when they return
to school in September.

Calculus at Jackson High School:
2003/2004
Recently we have received many parent inquires
regarding AP classes, that JHS will be offering for 2003/2004. We have
asked our questions to the administration of JHS and we are hoping we will be
able to give a "full report" next week. Thank you for your
patience. And please feel free to ask any follow up questions after you
read next week's newsletter.
Very briefly, Calculus at JHS is AP Calculus
AB and BC.
Financial Assistance Request for the Advanced
Dance Class at JHS
Judith Gray and Tamara Gower gave a
presentation on the Advanced Dance Class at JHS. They presently use a dated
version of the software program "Life Forms" to choreograph. They are kindly
asking us to consider making tax deductible donations (through the PTSA and
eventually through the Music and Fine Arts Booster club) to help them purchase
the upgraded software. The full price for licensing and training is $1700. Also,
as another way to show support, you are welcome to attend the upcoming dance
performance on Thursday, May 8th at 7 PM. Ticket prices are
$5.
