One controversial issue at the University of Washington is the change they are making this year regarding their English composition requirement. The 2 AP English Courses (Exam Grades) can still be counted toward literature credit but not the composition requirement. The UW also grants credit for high marks on other AP Exams: Art: History of Art, Art: Studio Art (Placement Only), Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science A, Computer Science AB, Economics: Micro, Economics: Macro, Environmental Science, European History, French Language, French Literature, German Language, Government and Politics: American, Government and Politics: Comparative, Human Geography, Latin Literature, Physics B, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism, Psychology, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Statistics, and U.S. History. We are also determining the credit available to the relatively new AP World History course.

AP Subject Area Experts (or those who would like to become one) Needed

AP World History is in its second year. Last year, when it debuted, it was the most popular first year AP course in the history of AP. There was some concern that mostly sophomores take World History and may not be ready for a college level course. However, the general consensus of AP World History teachers, is that sophomores are the perfect age. Sophomores are so eager.  They do not have senioritis. And most importantly, they did just fine on last years AP World History Exam. Two of the frequently recommended textbooks include: Bentley and Ziegler, Traditions and Encounters; and Stearns, et al, World Civilizations: The Global Experience, 3rd ed. An often sited book for summer reading is the 1998 Pulitzer Prize winning, "Guns, Germs, and Steel," by Jared Diamond. An AP World History Guide has been assembled at:

You can help with this effort in other subjects. The College Board has on-line discussion groups where teachers and teacher/parent helpers can learn about AP Courses and share that knowledge. One of the AP/IB Boosters goals is to have liaisons for each AP course. This person (or hopefully a couple of people for each subject) will follow daily AP subject discussions on the College Board's electronic forums, understand the details of this subject's AP exams, research how other schools implement this subject, assist teachers in developing on-line syllabi and other docs,
assist students and parents with understanding this course's workload, prerequisites, assist teachers and parents with course needs: books, supplies, university field trips, and national exam study materials.

If you are interested, please contact me at
info@apibboosters.org
and state which subject you would like to contribute to in this effort. You don't have to be an expert now, but you will become one.

Here is the list of courses. Some of these courses will be taught at JHS next year or shortly after that. Some of these subjects will not be offered through the school, but can be learned by students immediately through on-line learning programs such as APEX Learning.
