AP/IB Boosters Newsletter, March 23, 2003

Hello AP/IB Boosters

On Saturday, March 22, 2003, the Pacific Northwest Association for College Admission Counseling (PNACAC) sponsored its Spring College Fair at Seattle University. Over 150 colleges, many from out of state, were represented. The college recruiters in attendance echoed the basic theme of stressing to high school students to take rigorous classes including during their senior year. College admission officers want students to show they are willing to stretch when it comes to their own education. Students who do not challenge themselves will not impress colleges with a high GPA only. Colleges, such as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, expect students to take specific rigorous science classes – namely AP Chemistry and AP Physics. Practically all college recruiters at the event especially recommend advanced English and History courses because of the amount of writing required of college students. One of the recruiters discussed the fact that Washington State high school students in general are not as prepared as students from back east. This is one reason she definitely recommends AP or IB level classes for students.Another recruiter, from the University of Puget Sound, mentioned that they first look at the level of rigorous classes taken then the GPA and SAT scores.
