AP/IB Boosters Newsletter, March 3, 2003

Hello AP/IB Boosters

JHS students have the right stuff!

JHS 9th-11th graders just completed the preregistration process. The 8th graders at Heatherwood and Gateway middle schools are just now completing theirs. This information is used to help determine class offerings for the next school year. Students will actually register for specific classes (times, teachers) later this school year. The preregistration preliminary results from the 9th – 11th graders show students are interested in advanced courses. Average class size, based on total school enrollment and teacher resources, is approximately 33 students. Therefore, it is desirable to have at least this many students signup for a course. Some of the student signup numbers are:

AP Art History, 6

AP Calculus AB, 18

AP Calculus BC, 18

AP Chemistry, 32

Honors Chemistry, 30

AP Computer Science, 9

AP English Language, Literature & Composition (12th grade English), 22

12th grade honors English, 116

12th grade regular English, 197

AP Government & Politics: US, 45

Honors Government, 51

Government, 238

AP Studio Art, 13

AP US History (11th grade block), 51

11th grade honors block,
44

11th grade regular block,
312

AP World History (10th grade block),
31

10th grade honors block,
83

10th grade regular block, 350

The Everett School District is assisting with additional FTEs for the core AP courses during the first couple of years. This means that the core AP Courses (math, science, humanities) can start with smaller classes in the first 2 years as the program builds. In the 3rd year, AP courses, like other courses, must then stand on their own, drawing enough student interest.

This information (preliminary as it is) was distributed by Mr. Dahlem at the JLC meeting. Mr. Dahlem also distributed the Bellevue AP/IB tape to JLC members, "encouraging members to share it with their colleagues."  We appreciate Mr. Dahlem’s support in publicizing this information. We look forward to assisting the staff with making the AP and non-AP courses successful.

Last week, JHS held an 8th grade parents’ information evening. Members of the AP/IB Boosters were invited to attend and greeted many parents who will have children at Jackson next year. We welcome our new members.

In Wednesday’s Herald, there was a nice article on JHS.

Students can take AP Exams whether they have had an AP Course or not. One just needs to know the subject well. Last year, five JHS students took the AP Computer Science Exam (after their advanced computer science course at JHS). They all aced it with the highest score possible score of five.

On Friday, March 7th, Inglemoor High School (Northshore School District) has their International Baccalaureate Day for 9th graders.

T
he registration deadline is Monday, March 3rd. This is a chance for 9th graders to experience and learn about IB. An out-of-district transfer would be required to obtain an International Baccalaureate (IB) education though. The kind folks at Inglemoor welcome Everett School District families to consider this option.

AP/IB Boosters have been asked by a couple of parents, to service parents and students that have transportation needs to various opportunities. For example, car pooling to Inglemoor or Edmonds-Woodway IB program, car pooling to Kamiak High School, Summer Stretch at UW, etc. We will provide this service for all types of transportation needs including the above.  Process: Email
: info@apibboosters.org your transportation need and we will forward your need to other AP/IB Boosters with the same need.
