“Everett High School offered only French, German and Spanish, so he [Casey Snyder] turned to Everett Community College through the Running Start program.

Herald of Everett: Money to give kids a leg up

http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/06/03/19/100loc_a1money001.cfm

“Everett and Monroe are among a dozen school districts in the state to share $9 million in federal funding over the next five years through the GEAR UP Scholars Project, which stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs.

The money will follow students through their high school graduation in 2011, offering such perks as tutoring, summer programs, overnight field trips and, if they stick with it, up to $6,000 for college.”

Herald of Everett: GET going - Prepaid college tuition plans make the grade for families
“GET is Washington State's prepaid college tuition program. It encourages families to plan ahead by guaranteeing that the money saved for a child's college education will keep pace with rising college tuition.”

“The program is an opportunity to prepay college tuition at today's prices,” said Betty Lochner, director of the GET program. “The message we're trying to get out is 'start young.' It's outrageous how expensive college is getting.”
